Every spring brings the excitement of a new gardening season and I couldn't wait to jump right in this year. We did loose one full day each weekend due to rain, and the last weekend of April was a complete washout. But I did still get everything in and we'll see how things go:@) Two new small beds in the back, the far one has zucchini, and the glass lid is helping to warm up the soil for some assorted color mini pumpkin seeds to germinate. Total impulse buy on the pumpkins, but it would be fun if they grow.
Experiment #1...
Trellising the tomato plants:
I've seen, but didn't study,
a technique for tomato support
called the Florida weave.
This is my loose interpretation:@)
I used 6' stakes
and will continue to wrap the jute as the plants grow vertically.
These are the big boy/better boy/beefy size tomatoes.
The boxes for the back beds are just crates
that some parts came in at work.
Nothing fancy or intended to be long term.
The hinges on the corners allow them to fold up,
so I could get them into my car with ease.
I brought them home in September,
covered the grass with cardboard and left it all winter.
And these little metal trash cans are from Dollar Tree.
While rabbits weren't an issue last year,
I do already see one adolescent bunny
that seems to be a little... brazen.
So I thought this couldn't hurt for a while:@)
And I'll leave you with the strawberry garden:
Since I had to remove the third tier,
my son cut it to create a small corner for some red portulaca.
Just adding a little color and visual interest...
While still allowing room for my lawn mower between beds:@)
So there you have it folks,
the Gardening Games of 2023 have begun...
I hope you've been able to enjoy some time outdoors too.
Have a great weekend:@)
Great gardening ideas, Lynn...pinning them to my Midwest Gardening board. It will be fun to see how the roping works! Sandi
ReplyDeleteLynn, I love the idea of the trash can over your plant. We have squirrels that love digging in my planters of flowers and veggies. Good luck with your gardening.
ReplyDeleteI always love seeing the progression of your grace, Lynn. You’re so ingenious with the trash can idea and the tomato staking. I hope your pumpkins take off…that’ll be fun!
