Forever May She Wave Pie

I use cookie cutters for pies more than cookies! Here's a fun idea if you're planning to make a pie for the 4th of July. This happens to be an apple/rhubarb pie but any fruit would be great. I used a small star cutter and then cut stripes of various widths with a pizza cutter so that as I twisted them they'd look like they were waving in the wind. You'll have to make extra crust, I made 1 1/2 batches just to make sure I had enough.
While I'm a big fan of a huge mounded apple pie,
since the crust is detailed I cut the fruit a little smaller to try to keep the surface kind of even and flat.
The stripes are easier to work with and keep their shape better if they're about 1/2"-3/4" wide,
some of mine got a little too wide and flattened out a bit.

Here's another version from a few years ago. This one's even easier!
For apple/rhubarb pie, use your favorite apple pie recipe
and just substitute any amount of rhubarb you have.

  5. That is beautiful but I am scared of pies. Not eating them but making pie dough is scary.

  23. That's so cute, and I could do that so much easier than a top crust. For some reason unknown to man, I have trouble with double crust pies. The top crust rarely looks the way I want it to look. This is a great idea. I can see it with cherry pie!

  26. Your pie is SO very lovely. I also enjoyed your post on salsa. I use Rotel for a salsa as well but mine is thick and chunky with added garden tomatoes (none yet this summer). Happy Independence Day! This pie would be great and you have featured many other cute and patriotic-type dishes recently.
