what are you doing with the leftover ham?
- I picked up the smallest Food Saver bags and I'll be cubing and freezing smaller portions, just enough for a couple omelets, ham salad or to add to a small batch of pea soup.
- You can freeze the whole bone to use later, or make the stock now and freeze it in portions for when you're ready to make soup or beans. You can make the stock with onions/carrots/celery like you would chicken, or keep it basic with just the bone and water adding flavoring when you cook with it.
- There are many recipes on-line for creamy pasta and ham, scalloped potatoes and ham, loaded baked potatoes, soups, quiche, and last but not least, fried rice!
- Appetizers for parties this week: ham and cheese cubes on a toothpick with a sweet mustard dipping sauce, stuffed into (seeded) sweet or hot pickled cherry peppers, ham cubes to dip into a cheese fondue, ham and cheese cheeseball.
- Does anyone make Ham Cakes, if so, would you share your recipe?
What's your favorite thing to make with the leftovers?
Have a happy day:@)

hi earl!
ReplyDeleteMy friend gave me the ham bone and I promised her and another friend a container of split pea soup! Glad you had a happy Christmas. Earl is a cool pig, for sure. xo
ReplyDeleteWe had dinner away, so no leftovers. Boo hoo! These ideas made me hungry all over again!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Jane
We always send some home with family members and whatever is left at that point gets used mostly the way you said. We often add some to good old southern green beans or a pot of pinto beans. Did Santa bring Earl a new hat? He looks very happy!--------- Shannon
ReplyDeleteHi, Lynn...we pigged out, too. (oops, sorry, Earl)
ReplyDeleteI always freeze my entire ham hock and all ham still attached, and make soup....or put it in a crock pot of red beans.
xoxo bj
Tell Earl we 'pigged' out also but couldn't help ourselves. I do freeze the ham bone for bean soup later on. We use the ham all week for munching and dinner. I will freeze a few small batches like you do for omelets and such. No ham cake here! hugs, Linda
ReplyDeleteI bought a ham but didn't even prepare it. Not a big ham eater, so a couple times a year is okay- and not in large quantities. Think Earl likes me better for that? Re: my recent blog post- so do you think my pig and Earl are related? LOL
ReplyDeleteNow Earl you know we would never eat ham! LOL!
ReplyDeletehugs
Sissie
I have no leftovers :( We were all soooo hungry by the time we ate! But you have some great ideas for another day!
ReplyDeleteSo funny! I woke up this morning and told my husband that I was in the mood for ham and eggs...unfortunately, we had prime rib for Christmas dinner...its a tradition. We will have to make a ham this week though! I must have been channeling your blog post when I woke up (lol)!
ReplyDeleteWe had turkey - but sounds like you will be doing lots of cooking with ham this next year. sandie
ReplyDeleteI'm using my ham bone and some meat in my black eyed peas that I'm making for good luck on New Year's. I'd like to make some ham salad, too, but the first thing to make will be succotash.
ReplyDeleteAfter the ham sandwiches, there is never anything left : (
ReplyDeleteBeing that we are all feeling a little yucky around here..there is plenty of left over ham that I will need to do something with.
ReplyDeleteEarl is probably still napping after pigging out.
We love pea soup, bean soup, and a ham and cheese ball....mmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteWe have little left but will have ham biscuits.
ReplyDeleteI am baking ham on Wednesday for our family dinner....everyone takes leftovers home, and I will have sandwiches for a few days.....the bone and pieces go into lentil soup which is everyone's favorite and they will probably come back for that!!!
ReplyDeleteNever made ham cakes, but I have made yam/apple cakes this year.
I cook only fish for Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day we were guests at my brother's and sister-in-law, so no leftover ham in my house..much to my regret as I love using it as a base for pea soup!
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn~ Glad you enjoyed your Christmas dinner! I confiscated my MIL's ham bone from Christmas which is waiting for me to make bean soup! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year wishes to you & Earl :)
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteWish I had a ham bone. We had dinner with friends and they have the ham bone. I just may have to cook one so that I can make pea soup!
Happy New Year!
Carol
We served Lasagne for Christmas Eve, but may do ham for New Years. You shared some very good ideas. Thank you very much!
ReplyDeleteCAS
Hi Earl,
ReplyDeleteI must confess, no ham was eaten here. So we do not have ham leftovers. I wonder that Earl shares recipes with ham. LOL
Best greetings, Johanna
Always ham and bean soup or scalloped potatoes with ham. My parents always ground the ham and added mayo and pickles for sandwiches that were served at every shower, wedding, etc. I think I ever went to in Wisconsin growing up. (Was Earl OK with this post?!!)
ReplyDeleteFor me, it has to be either split pea soup or navy bean soup, although I've also used left-overs in a huge, skillet potato pancake with cheese and onion - yum! Sadly, we don't have ham at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteHam cake? cakes? I have never heard of that. How interesting. We just have ham for the next couple of nights, makes for very easy dinner planning :)
ReplyDeleteWe don't have Ham for Christmas, but AI love using the left over in potato soup or quiches.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a good one!
We didn't have any leftover ham, Earl. Guess we made pigs of ourselves.
ReplyDeleteCan you believe my husband likes a roast on Christmas. So no ham left overs for us :(. I may have to go get a little ham for New Year's Eve though, now that I saw Earl.
