Homemade Russian Salad Dressing

This Creamy, Pickley Russian Salad Dressing was a blast from the past for me. My family made it all the time when I was a kid, no recipe, just a plop of mayo, squirt of ketchup and dab of relish:@) But I searched to find a proper recipe so I could share it here. I hear some folks put this on hamburgers or use it as a dipping sauce for french fries. And while I'm not saying this is a diet dressing... I am saying it sure is a great occasional indulgence!

Russian Salad Dressing-adapted from Rachel Ray
2/3 C mayonnaise
1/3 C ketchup
1/4 C dill pickle relish-we would have used sweet relish, but dill is good!
approx 3 Tblsp grated onion and it's juice-I cut this back to 1 Tblsp
S&P to taste-I added a tiny little pinch of salt and lots of freshly ground pepper
~ Mix everything and let sit for about an hour before serving.

Oh this is naughty but nice folks, have a happy day:@)

  1. My mother used to make that and she absolutely loved radishes. Sometimes she added chopped hard cooked egg, too. I forgot all about that. Thanks.

  3. Hi Lynn,

I love this! Russian dressing is a lot like Thousand Island dressing, isn't it? My mom used to make homemade Thousand Island dressing when we were growing up, and I loved it! I also have my mom's recipe for a cold pasta salad with tuna and Russian Dressing; it's great in the hot summer months. You can e-mail me Lynn, if you'd like the recipe. I hope you have a wonderful week!

  8. I have always had a fondness for Russian dressing! My mom would make a similar recipe---always better than the bottled stuff! I think Bill would enjoy this on a salad, too :)

  11. So nice! When I was a little girl our next door neighbor was rather like a grandmother to me and an incredible cook. She taught me to make a dressing just like this. She also helped me win a ribbon in my 4-H cooking club.
