Philadelphia Pepper Hash

Hey everyone! Planning for Labor Day, a B-B-Q or looking for a great tailgating side dish? Oh yea, I can smell football season!!! I actually found this post unpublished from last summer, so I thought I'd share it for On The Menu Monday! It's great with sandwiches and goes well with grilled food.

What is Philadelphia Pepper Hash?
You could say it's a sweet, yet vinegary, no mayonnaise, alternative to cole slaw. 
It does require grating the veggies, or doing a lot of chopping, and has the consistency of relish.
I'm curious to see how this will look using my new KA food processor!

Philadelphia Pepper Hash
1 medium cabbage (Google says medium is 2 lbs-ish... I'd go light)
2 medium bell peppers (one red, one green)
1 small carrot (optional, I like the color)
1/2 C vinegar
1/2 C sugar
1 tsp mustard seed
1 tsp celery seed
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper

Grate cabbage and pepper (and carrot if using) till medium coarse.
Mix vinegar, sugar and spices in pan, place over low heat till sugar melts. Remove from heat.
Mix all, refrigerate over night.
Makes approximately 1 1/2 quarts.

  4. Lynn -- what a great alernative to cole slaw. I can easily adapt this to lower carb (switch out the sugar for splenda) -- this is going on the menu :)

  8. There's always room for another slaw recipe! I think I'd break out the food processor for this one too.

    That is so sad to think Labor Day is coming soon and pigskin throwing coming (cover your ears, Earl).

  13. Oh that does sound like a great side dish for tailgating. We are camping next week and I could probably make it the day ahead to take since it needs to sit. Yum.

  23. OH, I'm saving this recipe. It looks delicious and reminds me of an old recipe I had back in the
    '70s and lost.
    I may just have to run to the store and get cabbage and make this tonight. Yum.
