Grammy's White Sheet Cake
The cake was made on a rainy day so I opted for the perky colorful nonpareils around the outer edge.

Grammy's White Sheet Cake
1 C butter
1 C water
2 C sugar
2 1/4 C A/P flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 C sour cream
Frosting:
1 C butter
6 Tblsp evaporated milk
4 1/2 C powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/8 tsp salt
1 C pecans, chopped-optional
Cake:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees and grease sheet pan.
- Melt butter and water in large saucepan over medium heat.
- Remove from heat and stir in sugar, flour, soda and salt. Stir with whisk until smooth.
- Add eggs and vanilla, mix well.
- Add sour cream, mix well.
- Pour into well greased 11x17 sheet pan.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cake springs back when touched.
- Remove from oven and allow to cool while you make the frosting.
- Add butter and evap milk in medium pan, heat until melted and bring to a simmer.
- Remove from heat and stir in sugar, vanilla and salt. Stir till smooth.
- Mix in nuts (if using).
- Spread over cake.

-I made half of the recipe and used a 9x13 sheet pan.
-I did cut the sugar in the cake back by a couple tablespoons, it was plenty sweet.
-This frosting is lick the bowl good folks! It's almost nutty, I'll be sure to use nuts the next time.
-Work fast if you want candies to stick to the top of the icing!

ReplyDeleteI agree, tried and true recipes are always welcomed in my house. I love white cake and this one reminds me of the cakes we use to get at school as part of our lunch. The nuns were wonderful bakers.

ReplyDeleteI am so glad you liked it! I agree that the frosting is almost nutty or caramely and lick the bowl good! I noticed your Challah bread. I always wanted to try Challah, so I bought a loaf at the store a few weeks ago and it was so dry? Is it supposed to be dry or did I just get a bad loaf? I better try your homemade version.

What a lovely and inspiring blog you have created here. Simply charming eye candy every where. I love the jello frosting recipe and can not wait to try it. Not just that recipe but you certainly have some yummy ideas. My husband and I have been doing Weight Watchers for a year and doing very well. Therefore; I need to save some of these for pot luck dinners. We love to entertain family and friends, especially in the summer, because our home gets very small when filled with very many. We try to have 6 to 8 potlucks during the warm weather. I'm very excited that I found your blog. I know that my dishes will be the hit of the parties.
