They say radishes are a very easy to grow cool weather crop, they also say radishes only take about 30 days to grow and mature...
Turns out, they fib. I decided to toss a 20¢ pack of seeds into my half barrel planter back in March (I thought I wrote the date down...
um, apparently not. It was around St. Patrick's Day, the same time I planted my peas). The idea being they'd have plenty of time to grow and be pulled before I planted warmer weather veggies around May 15th. I pulled these out on May 11th, giving them about two months of growing time. The largest one is only about 3/4".
They are HOT-HOT-HOT!
I say it all the time, whether jalapenos or radishes, homegrown are always hotter than store bought.
And while these little guys are cute, they are pretty dry.
So, my radish experiment didn't go as well as I would have liked, but it was still kinda fun to watch.

I really wanted to have my planter boxes made by now, but they aren't. Big shocker! I love hot radishes and would love to grow some. Your small spicy radishes look great to me!

yes, homegrown radishes are definitely hotter than store-bought! but, yum!
ReplyDeleteKudos to you Lynn on your 20 cent investment and experiment! Maybe it was the variety you planted that resulted in smaller radishes? I've always thought it would be fun to grow beautiful watermelon radishes. :)
ReplyDeleteI have never had any luck with veggies. Not even the simple radishes that kindergarten kids can grow in a cut down milk carton like a boss. I did buy some recently from a local farm market and they were extremely hot but oh soooo good.
