Simple Flower Technique for Decorating Cookies and 10" Peanut Butter Cookie Recipe

I saw this idea at Walmart the other day and just had to share it. With Mother's Day coming up quickly this simple flower technique for decorating cookies (or cakes) is even easy enough to get the kids involved. To make the flowers: using a star tip or a drop flower tip, start in the center and just go around in a circle until you have the size you want. The cookie I saw only had the round flowers made with a star tip, I used the drop flower tip which gave me the little pointed flowers too. Yep, you could also use a leaf tip but I wanted to keep this as a basic and easy as possible.
I used a crisp decorator's icing made with shortening, butter cream would be good too and make smoother flowers.
My big peanut butter cookie was baked in a 10" cast iron griddle pan. I patted the dough out to about 3/8" thick which left about 1/2" to the edge of the pan uncovered. As the cookie baked it spread and filled in the whole pan.
It doesn't have to be perfect to make people smile folks:@)

Peanut Butter Cookie-makes one large 10" cookie-half a recipe from Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook
1/2 + 1/8 C A/P flour
1/4 + 1/8 tsp baking soda
1/8 tsp salt
1/4 C butter
1/4 C peanut butter-I used creamy
1/4 C sugar
1/4 C brown sugar
1/2 egg-guesstimate as best you can-it will be ok
1/4 tsp vanilla
  1. Stir together dry ingredients in separate bowl.
  2. Beat butter for 30 seconds, add peanut butter and sugars, beat until fluffy.
  3. Add egg and vanilla, mix well.
  4. Add dry and mix until combined.
  5. Form into a ball and put dough on cookie sheet or skillet, press with fingers into an even circle about 3/8" thick (approximately 9" round). I smoothed out the top too.
  6. Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 18 minutes.
  7. Cool on sheet pan/skillet and decorate as desired.
Decorator's Icing
1 C powdered sugar
1/4 C shortening-you can sub some butter if you'd like, I used 1 Tblsp butter
1/4 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 tsp water-may need a little more, you want it to all combine well
food coloring-optional
  1. Slowly mix everything until combined.
  2. Scrape down the sides and let 'er rip for about 5 minutes.
  3. Mix in food coloring if using.
  4. Place icing tips in bags, fill bags and decorate as desired.
Have a sticky sweet happy day:@)

  6. You just took the pan cookie to the next level! My family would love frosting on their cookie---not sure I could decorate mine as nicely as yours, but they'd be thrilled no matter what it looked like ;)
