Christmas Symbolism-Part Three

Hi everyone! I'm happy to be joining Pink Saturday and Seasonal Sunday! Here are a few more symbols that each have a special meaning for Christmas.
Once again, all of these definitions are courtesy of Bronner's Christmas Wonderland. 

Rooster
Legend states that the only time a rooster crowed at midnight was the night that Jesus was born. In Spanish and Latin American countries "Misa del Gallo", the Mass of the Rooster, is celebrated at midnight on Christmas Eve. The crowing of the rooster at the dawn of each morning symbolizes the daily triumph of light over darkness and the victory of good over evil.

Robin
The night Christ was born a little brown bird shared the stable with the Holy Family. During the night, Joseph built a fire to keep the family warm, but as they slept the fire burned out. From its nest the bird flew down and fanned the embers with its wings. The bird was very close to the fire and heat turned the bird's feathers red. The breast of the Robin has been red ever since to remind us of its love and compassion for the baby Jesus.

Lighthouse
Lighthouses lift up our spirits and inspire us. Just as the bright beacon of light guides the ships along their route, directing them away from danger, the light symbolizes guidance through life. The lighthouse also serves as a symbol of Christ, the light of the world.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path". Psalm 119:105

Pinata
The pinata may have originated in China and then spread to Italy, Spain and the Americas. Early pinatas were clay pots decorated with colored paper and filled with tiny treasures and treats. Used for religious teaching, breaking the pinata represents good defying evil. The treasures pouring from the broken pinata symbolize blessings, charity and abundance.

    I always love learning about Christmas tradtions! A friend of ours, who is from Germany, always hangs a glass pickle in her tree....really!

    I get Bonner's catalog too but haven't bought anything yet. These were some cute ornaments and I love the history you associated with them especially the lighthouse one. Happy Pink Saturday.

    I loved reading your post about Christmas traditions...I also enjoyed your recent ones, including your darling cloche arrangement and your cookie baking! I recall having the same issues with dough sticking when I used to use the plastic Hallmark ornaments that made designs in the dough. You're a better woman than I......cuz I pitched my efforts and got rid of those cookie cutters! :)

    I love these post about symbologism..... about Robin...we have another legend...about Jesus Christ Passion.....now that I Know about lighthouse I'm really sorry not having buy one when I visited them in Florida, Geaorgia and South CArolina... :( ...have a very nice weekend, love Flavia

    I Love those interesting little stories! My favorite is the one about the ROBIN!!! I LOVE that Bird! Your ornaments are beautiful to match those stories...YES, those are some of my favorite Christmas Movies too, AND Christmas Story(I relate with that movie because it was MY ERA)!!! The new Fred Claus is good too...

    for me it is very interesting to read all those informations. I didn't knew all this. For us the ornaments in the Christmas Tree are just decoration. So it's nice to see which meaning they have.

    I love those ornaments. I only have one from Bronner's, a beautiful Sherlock Holmes. One year I dropped it and was just crushed (as was the ornament, alas).

    Beautiful posts...I did not know any of that. LOVE Christmas Vacation, but don't have the DVD. Several years ago I bought a bunch of DVDs with the shows I grew up with...Rudolph, Frosty, Little Drummer Boy, Charlie Brown, etc., and we love just leaving them running. Thanks for stopping by!!
