Darn Good Baked Beans! ...with Bacon and Brown Sugar

When three bloggy buddies rave about a baked bean recipe I just have to try it. Debbie calls these the Best Baked Beans Ever and I'm so glad she shared her recipe. While I tend to shy away from labels like the best or the greatest I will say these are some Darn Good Baked Beans! They're made from three different canned beans and the most time consuming part is frying up the bacon:@) They are sweet and bacon-y and the four of us may have pigged out just a tad... we ate all of them! They'll be on our menu again and I think you'll like 'em if you try 'em folks. This would be a great side dish for your Labor Day BBQ or upcoming tailgating.

Darn Good Baked Beans!-from Mountain Breaths
2 C (one 15oz can) kidney beans, rinsed
2 C (one 15oz can) great northern or butter beans, rinsed-I used great northern
2 C (one 15 oz can) pork and beans-I poured some of the juice off
1/2 lb bacon, crisped and broken into pieces
1 small onion, chopped-mine was smaller than a baseball
1/2 C ketchup
1/2 C brown sugar
1/8 tsp garlic powder
  1. Brown the bacon, drain, break into pieces.
  2. Pour off all but about 1 Tblsp fat and cook the onions for about 5-7 minutes. 
  3. Mix everything together and pour into a 2 quart baking dish.
  4. Bake uncovered at 350 for an hour.
Eat well and have a happy day:@)

  3. I've made three bean baked beans and they are awesome. I think it's the combination of beans that makes them so good and different from the other recipes out there.

  4. I'll try it! I will definitely use the great northern beans over the butter beans too. (Been in GA for 40 years and still don't like butter beans. Shh... don't tell anyone.) I also love it that you tell how big your onion was. It's the stuff like that that makes it easier to try a recipe.

  11. Years ago I had a recipe from a co-worker that had at least 6 different kinds of beans in it, along with the bacon, some hamburger, peppers, onion and other stuff. Key was a lot of black pepper. Those were the BEST beans, but I've misplaced the recipe. Hmmm....wonder if I could replicate it? Its just the two of us, so its hard to make a little batch of baked beans like that.

    Hey, girl! Long time no see! Have missed you. I have been a bad, bad, BAD blogger, but I really do have an excuse (actually excuses), but I am trying to jump back in the water. Wanted to get by here and see what you were cooking.

    My mother had a great recipe for baked beans, and I can't remember it! And the weird thing is, I used to make it. It had baked beans, white onion, catsup (I think), Worcestershire Sauce, garlic (either salt or powder), I think brown sugar, and ground beef. Yeah, it was good! It was a baked bean casserole. Oh, and it had bacon, too. We used to eat it at the lake after a day of water skiing.

    Water skiing... seems like an alien term for something I used to almost daily during the summers growing up. It makes me ache to think about it in my dotage! LOL

    My MIL makes her baked beans this way, and they are DELICIOUS!! I've made this recipe a few times myself, and they're always a hit when I take them anywhere. They look more interesting than just plain old baked beans, and they really have more depth of flavor, I think. I'm glad you discovered these and are enjoying them. :)

  20. I made these beans last night. Oh, they were absolutely amazing! I wanted to freeze leftovers in individual servings; but had barely any left!

    I am a Bush's Beans fan, so I used Bush's low-sodium kidney and cannelini beans and Bush's Honey Chipotle Grillin' Beans. Decreased ketchup and brown sugar to 1/3 cups each. Added 2 cloves of chopped garlic to the onions and replaced the 1/8 tsp garlic with 1/4 tsp SMOKED paprika. Will not drain beans next time, as these got a little dry even when covered. I prefer a saucier baked bean, but don't believe extra ketchup would have been the way to achieve that.

    I will never be able to enjoy a plain can of baked beans anymore--this casserole has spoiled me forever!

  21. I call these Ball Park Beans. I use Bush's beans for all of the above-you can use large limas instead of the white beans and it's super good. I also add about a TBSP of vinegar. If you cook the onions and chopped bacon together (just until done) you can add all ingredients into a crockpot and cook for 6-8 hours on low. Start it in the a.m. and it's ready for dinner, cookout, whatever. Sometimes I cook them overnight to have them for a midday cookout.
