When I was a kid my Grandpop would hammer 4 nails into a spool and I would "knit" a long tube shape with yarn...

i think you could assemble them into a neat wreath - or maybe garland. or make vintage tree ornaments from them.
I saw an adorable wreath for a sewing room made from these on Pintrest. This is an interesting find!

That is an amazing haul of spools! So many folks are into spoolies, but I like the idea of a wreath or in a jar.

ReplyDeleteIf I had them, I might use a few as 'hooks' for aprons or dish towels by putting a nail in the wall with a large-ish head and slide the spool on it. Then I could admire the decorative ends. xo
That happens to me all the time.....I'm always buying something that speaks to me even though I don't have any idea what I will do with it when I buy it! I love your finds and would have bought those in a heartbeat! I've seen several used as art...shaped in the form of a heart. I'm sure you'll come up with something fabulous!

Lynn, these would have come home with me too. I like them just as they are, so I'd fill a bowl or jar and just enjoy their beauty.

I {heart} spools and have been crafting with spools over the past couple of years on the blog. Everything looks better on a spool pedestal. Enjoy!

ReplyDeleteGosh, aren't those a great find? Right off I thought they'd make neat pulls on a sewing chest or nice feet on a sewing box. I'd also love them in a glass apothecary jar because I have some with thread on them in one and it looks pretty. I'm sure you'll find a great use for them.
ReplyDeleteLots of good ideas. I saw a clear ginger jar lamp filled with wooden spools - very clever. For christmas this year my son-in-law got me an ornament made with a wooden spool some fabric and ribbon wrapped around where the thread would be - beads on both ends and a loop for hanging on the tree. I showed it on my blog. Very simple and very clever idea.

What a fun find! I don't know if you are a MaryJanesFarm Farmgirl but the December Sister Issue (online only) showed message signs made with old spools. They decorated the spools with ribbon and lace and put a curlicue wire coming up from the top that held individual letters. It would be cute for Valentine's Day, for example 'LOVE'. Here is how the wire would look.

What a fun haul Lynn! I would have no idea what to do with them but I'd be tempted to pick up a bag too if I saw them. I have a bird house that has old wooden spools painted white and stacked for columns, it would be a shame to paint these though :)
