Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

I'm sure everyone that's been cooking for a while has their own favorite way of making spaghetti sauce. I also know there are those like me that fly by the seat of our pants and generally don't use a recipe at all... As soon as I saw this from Eat Cake For Dinner I saved it thinking it sounded like a heavily spiced sauce and it peeked my interest. Decided something simmering on the stove for a few hours would be wonderful on a recent rainy day and chose to make it-glad I did!
The spices get tempered nicely with the spaghetti and sausage,
this whole dish works great together, a crusty bread takes it over the top.
Don't hesitate to give this a try folks!

Easy Homemade Spaghetti Sauce
1 lb Sweet Italian Sausage links with casings removed
1 C onion, chopped
1/2 C green bell pepper, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 Tblsp dried oregano
1 Tblsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp dried parsley
1 1/2 tsp seasoned salt-I use 1 tsp
1 1/2 tsp dried basil
1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes in puree
1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  1. Brown sausage in dutch oven, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. Add onion and green pepper and saute for about 5 minutes. 
  3. Add garlic and saute for about 30 seconds.
  4. Add everything else. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to a low simmer, cover and cook for 1 hour.
  5. Remove lid and cook for at least 1 more hour (I let mine go for 3 hours total).
  6. Serve with anything you like red sauce over!
  7. Freezes nicely.
Notes:
  • When I went shopping for this I couldn't get a 28 oz can of crushed tomatoes (without basil already added), so I grabbed petite diced tomatoes-worked great!
  • Since I was using the diced tomatoes above I used a 14.5 oz can of tomato sauce... no problem.
  • The only other thing I would do differently is cut the seasoned salt back to 1 tsp, this is strictly a matter of preference.
  • Freezes beautifully!

  1. I made homemade sauce last night. Opened a can of stewed tomatos with garlic and pepper, simmered over browned meat and added two laughing cow wedges to melt into creaminess! It was yum.

  9. For some reason, I don't make pasta all that often and when I do, I tend to use just olive oil, basil and fresh tomatoes mixed with it. My husband loves a good sauce. I really should make this for him, he'd be so surprised!

  14. Being of Italian decent I have my own passed down recipe I use every week. I always enjoy reading about someone's sauce recipe. Mine is very similar to yours. The photos are mouthwatering.
