BBQ Sauerkraut with Bacon or Knockwurst

I've wanted to try this BBQ Sauerkraut recipe for a while and it did not disappoint! The original with bacon is meant to be a side dish or topping for hot dogs, I chose to make it a main dish by adding knockwurst instead of bacon. Some people suggest serving it over potatoes for a hearty meal. It's sweet from brown sugar but still has the tang of sauerkraut. This would be great at your next cookout or tailgate party (leave the sausage whole and serve on rolls). As long as your crowd likes sauerkraut, it will be a winner. While this may not be the prettiest pic on the blog folks, it sure is a tasty one:@)
If you won't have the full 1.5-2 hours to cook it at your party I suggest partially baking it and then placing it on the grill or in the oven when you get there. And while I haven't tried it, I'm thinking this would work in an uncovered slow cooker too.

BBQ Sauerkraut-from food.com
1/2 C onion, chopped-I used 1 Tblsp dried minced onion
5 slices bacon, sliced-I used a few links of knockwurst and 1/4 tsp liquid smoke
15.5 oz can sauerkraut
15.5 oz can diced tomatoes-I used petite diced and drained whatever liquid easily poured from the can
3/4 C brown sugar, packed-I used 1/2 C
  1. I just mixed everything together. For the original recipe:
  2. Brown onion and bacon in skillet. 
  3. Mix everything in 2 quart baking dish. 
  4. Bake at 350 degrees for two hours. Sauerkraut will look clear and shiny and the dish will be caramelized around the edges.

  3. Oh my, does this ever sound good, Lynn! I love sauerkraut anyway, but BBQ style is a new one. I like the idea of a little liquid smoke and 1/2 cup of brown sugar sounds perfect. I think I'll fix this in the fall sometime. Thanks for sharing!
