Hummus Made With Peanut Butter

As much as I love my munchies, there's just no way I'd ever use a whole can of tahini and it costs too much money to throw away. Saw a recipe from Alton Brown and after reading the reviews did a little tweaking... I ended up with a very flavorful dip that I will make again!

Hummas With Peanut Butter
(1) 15 oz can of chick peas (Garbanzo beans), drained and rinsed
Zest and juice of one lemon
2 small cloves of garlic
Handful of parsley
3 Tblsp olive oil
1 Tblsp creamy peanut butter
1 tsp sesame oil
1/2 tsp ground cumin
A few grinds of pepper
pinch of salt
Water if needed
Serve with pita chips, flat bread, tortilla chips, veggies or anything that sounds good!
  1. Put everything except water into a food processor and let 'er rip!
  2. Stop the machine and scrape down the sides a couple times, if it seems too thick add a little water, just 1 tsp at a time until you reach the desired consistency. I only added 1 tsp.
Notes:
  • I can really taste the garlic and lemon. To change it up I'll try roasted garlic (tutorial here) next time, maybe 6-8 cloves.
  • Don't sweat the parsley folks, use some if you have it, leave it out if not. But I do think the specks of green are pretty.
  • Other options: using lime instead of lemon and adding crushed red pepper or hot sauce.
  • This gets better the longer it sits in the fridge. Sounds like it should be stored in the fridge and served at room temp.
  • Used the mini bowl of my KA food processor, worked like a champ! You do have to let it run for a few minutes though.
If you'd like ideas for other bean dips you can find some I've made here.
Have a happy day:@)

  4. Hi Lynn, I never add tahini when I make hummus since it really packs in calories and fat (I like to choose how I pack in calories and fat, like from cake or chocolate lol). But I did taste a hummus once that had cashews in it. I am going to try this. I am long overdue for some. I like it spread on a wrap with grilled veggies. xo

  5. This sounds like it would be a good snack for the grand kids maybe minus the garlic.

    Have a great weekend. xo

  9. What a fun idea, I never thought of peanut butter in hummus but it's, in some ways, similar to tahini. This version sounds quite delicious and unique. Tahini does last forever, just about, if you keep it in the fridge - just in cause you do want to use it.

  11. I make homemade hummus and you are right about the cost of tahini. I shall switch to peanut butter. I like red pepper hummus using roasted red peppers the best.

  12. Great idea! They are pretty similar in flavor, after all. My store sells a brand of tahini that isn't too expensive and I just keep the jar in the frig. I've never had any trouble with it going stale at all.

  14. I love the idea of making hummus without the tahini. You are right it is expensive and peanut butter is a perfect alternative. Wow, this totally cool.

  22. First off...I don't know what chick peas are...*shhhh, don't tell anyone...everyone already thinks I am a little strange...:)
Are they the same as blackeyed peas?
I love ANYthing with peanut butter so am sure i'd like this, too. but...peas and peanut butter..? One thing I've learned in blogging is that different parts of the country eat different foods.
(another secret between you and me...now swear on your pinky that you won't tell anyone that I've never tasted hummus (even the word makes me quezzy).
Thanks much for the recipe and I would love to try it. Just tell me what chick peas are. :)

  25. Lynn~ Hummus with PB...what a great idea!! I had a jar of tahini in the fridge that of course expired before I could use a fourth of it! I'll have to give this a try~ I love the idea of roasted garlic too :)

  26. Never had humus, but willing to try it. The idea of peanut butter makes it more tempting. During my daughter's baby shower one of the gals who helped with the food brought a dish and it had humus in it. Everyone gobbled it right up. I was so busy I never got a chance to try it. I must be missing something.

  27. I know, that Tahini is super-expensive, but then I guess that's why sesame seeds are so high-priced, too! I've only seen Tahini in one size jar, large, which makes no sense. Oh well! I've used peanut butter in my hummus ever since our son (my go-to guy on all things "food") told me it would work just fine, & it did. Hummus is so good & very healthy.
