Lemon Spritz Sunflowers

Well, I thought I'd get 'right back on the saddle' after my cooking flop yesterday and tried some Lemon Spritz Cookies from Taste of Home. It's nice to use the cookie press more often than just Christmas!
They taste great and I think this is such a cute and simple way to decorate them.

My inspiration:

Sunny, lemon flavored cookies.
Lemon-Butter Spritz Cookies
2 C butter, softened
1 1/4 C sugar
Grated peel of one lemon
2 eggs
2 tsp lemon juice*
1 tsp vanilla
5 1/4 C flour
1/4 tsp salt
Colored sugar or other decorations
  1. Cream butter, sugar and zest till fluffy. Add eggs, juice and vanilla, mix well.
  2. Combine flour and salt and gradually add to wet, mix well.
  3. Load cookie press. Press dough 1" apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Decorate with sugar etc.
  4. Bake 400 degrees* for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned around edges. Yield: About 12 dozen.
  • I used the flower (ring) plate and put a little bit of dough in the open center of each flower so the decorations wouldn't fall through.
  • Added a little yellow food coloring paste too.
  • *I suggest exchanging the lemon juice for 1-2 tsp lemon extract for a bigger lemon flavor.
  • Even though the reviews for this cookie are very good, I was concerned that 400 degrees was too hot, so I opted for 375 for 10 minutes and they turned out fine.
  • The leaves are just a rolled out gum drop and shaped by hand.

  1. Oh these are so cute! I bet they taste yummy also. I could see a whole tablescape and menu around sunflowers!

  2. I love lemony desserts so I will be giving these a try. Love how you decorated them. That sunflower is a beauty. xo,

  6. Those are so cute, isn't it funny that when we post a "fail" we have to post a success immediately after? I bet they're yummy. Wish I had a cookie press. I'm headed to the thrift store today, maybe I'll take a look around for one.

  7. Talk about cute!!! Absolutely adorable, Lynn. Love how you added the little green leaf.

  10. Beautiful! I've never done pressed cookies. I just may have to remedy that.

  11. Cute! I forget to make pressed cookies after Cmas! I did make cut out cookies yesterday though. Bought some new cutters on line! The bee hive was one, but I got others too. Coming to a post soon! :)

  12. These are so cute. Pressed cookies remind me of baking with my mom and using her huge metal presser! :) I'd love it if you came over to Cast Party Wednesday and shared this recipe with us.
I hope to see you there!

  13. You do have talent! They are so cute:)

  14. A great idea for my cookie press. I always use it for Christmas cookies and it just sits there all the rest of the year. I love lemon flavored everything. Thanks Lynn.
    Hugs, Jeanne

  15. Hi Lynn,
I own also a cookie press. By my cookies looked never so clearly shaped like yours. More than that from yesterday. So I have really to try this recipe.
Thank you for providing all those wonderful recipes.
    Best greetings, Johanna

  16. These are the cutest cookies!!! I have the old fashioned hand cookie press that was my mother's. You're right the only time I make the spritz is at Christmas.

  17. Lynn, what a great idea to use the press for more than just Christmas and I love bite-sized food. Love the decoratint. Joni

  18. What an adorable cookie, and I agree with Joni, why just make them at Christmas. I was thinking of that last year at Christmas, with all of our once a year treats, but sometimes I guess that is good or it would be treat overload. These are just the happiest little cookies!

  19. There you go with the lemon again. You and I have the same love of lemon I think. Looks so pretty!

  20. Lemon desserts are one of my favorties and your cookies are the cutest. If it every gets cool enough to turn on the oven again, I'll have to try them. In the meantime, I'll just look at them and drool on the laptop. Yum.

  21. These cookies sound so delicious! Guess what I am doing during the upcoming hurricane?
I'll let you know how they turn out!

  22. Those are some of the prettiest cookies I've ever seen - no kidding - you must have a special cookie thingie!

  23. Now why didn't I ever think of that? Adorable. Love the leaves too.
